Minimum Requirements for Deputy Sheriff
Must have graduated from High School or possess a GED equivalent
Must be 21 years of age at time of appointment
Must be a U.S. Citizen
Must possess a valid Virginia driver's license
Must complete a physical examination, if selected
Must be available for emergency calls and standby duty, overtime, and details outside the facility
Must be able to work rotating shifts (days, evenings, nights, weekends and holidays) and various hours.
Must be able to successfully complete the Central Virginia Criminal Justice Academy within the first 12 months of employment, unless you are VA Law enforcement certified. Successful completion includes passing all phases of academic, physical, driver and firearms training.
Perform all other tasks as required by the Sheriff
Enforcing laws; make arrests; investigating criminal activity; serving civil process and criminal warrants; testifying in court; perform court services/security; transports; monitor drug and gang activity
Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions
Prepare clear, comprehensive written or computer reports
Ability to deal courteously, firmly, and tactfully with the public
Responds to radio dispatches and answers calls and complaints; issue traffic summons; ensuring the safety of the public
Serving as the law enforcement liaison with the school system; teaching public awareness and prevention classes; attending school and community meetings
Subject to inside and outside environmental conditions, extreme cold or heat, hazards and may be exposed to blood borne pathogens.
